Were you sold fake jewelry by a stranded driver for 'gas money'? The CHP wants to talk to you.
A bizarre and very involved scam has reportedly been swindling Northern California drivers over the last few months, say CHP officers.
It goes something like this: A driver with a seemingly broken-down vehicle, usually an SUV, flags down other motorists on freeways or more deserted roads, and then asks them to buy gold Cheap Jewelry Websites — rings, necklaces, or even counterfeit Rolexes — in exchange for a bit of gas money.
Some scammers have claimed they've lost their wallet; others say they need to get to the hospital to help a family member.
At times, as some reports stated, they'll even jump in front of an unsuspecting car to get the driver to stop or approach someone at a gas station.
It's a weird but apparently convincing scheme. The jewelry has reportedly been stamped with "18k," but when the buyer gets the pieces examined or takes them to a pawn shop, they inevitably find out the "18k gold" is actually cheap brass.
According to the Modesto Bee, numerous people have reported the scam in action, and it's now believed to be a statewide issue. Officers don't know how many people are involved in the scam. A spokesperson for the Sacramento CHP tells SFGATE they believe those involved may be taking their efforts further north.
On Wednesday, the Central Division of the CHP tweeted that the issue is ongoing, and that they are searching for others who may have fallen victim to similar crimes. |
