| NEW ORLEANS -- David Stern is going from the NBA commissioners office to the Hall of Fame. Keith Magnuson Jersey . The recently retired Stern was elected Friday to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and will be enshrined with the class of 2014 on Aug. 8 in Springfield, Mass. Stern was on a ski trip to Colorado on Friday with his wife while the NBA was holding its first All-Star weekend without him in charge since 1983. New Commissioner Adam Silver and many other league employees who worked under Stern attended the press conference. "I wanted to be here for David because I knew he wasnt in New Orleans this weekend. Just to be here to share the experience and then relay it back to him what the feel in the room was," said Silver, who worked under Stern since 1992. "As I said earlier, while David is a modest guy, I know he was moved by the fact this was all happening so quickly, and he has always told me he doesnt like to reflect back sort of on his life or his career, but this will certainly force him to. And I know this is an emotional moment for him and its an emotional moment for everybody who has worked with him over these years." Alonzo Mourning, Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, Kevin Johnson and Spencer Haywood are hoping to be part of the class. They were chosen as finalists, with the full class to be unveiled April 7 during the NCAA Final Four. Hardaway and Richmond were teammates in Golden State and made up the Warriors "Run TMC" trio along with Chris Mullin, who was elected to the Hall in 2011. Stern retired on Feb. 1 after exactly 30 years as commissioner, during which he brought the league to its greatest success. Jerry Colangelo, chairman of the Hall of Fame board, said the Hall hopes to have a special spot to display a tribute to Stern. "He deserves to be recognized in a huge way," Colangelo said. Stern was elected by the contributors committee. Also directly elected to the Hall of Fame were Lithuania star Sarunas Marciulionis by the international committee, former Indiana Pacers coach Bob "Slick" Leonard by the ABA committee, former New York Knicks player Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton by the early African-American pioneers committee, and former Temple star Guy Rodgers by the veterans committee. College coaches Eddie Sutton, Nolan Richardson and Gary Williams were also finalists, as were former womens coach Harley Redin and the womens team from Immaculata College, which won three straight national championships. Bushs 86-yard touchdown gave the Lions an early lead, and they eventually came away with a 13-12 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday night. But Detroit also turned the ball over three times and committed 15 penalties, looking a lot like the team that frittered away a playoff spot last season because of costly mistakes in close games. Calvin Johnson played for the first time this preseason, catching two passes for 27 yards, but Stafford was intercepted once and the Lions struggled in the red zone. Blake Bortles threw for 158 yards and a touchdown for the Jaguars. Jacksonville started Chad Henne, but Bortles -- the third pick in this years draft -- was impressive in relief. He completed 10 of 16 passes, including a 13-yard touchdown to Allen Hurns. The Jaguars were about as mistake-prone as the Lions, turning the ball over twice and committing 12 penalties for 101 yards. Detroits 15 penalties went for 131 yards, including a roughing the passer call on Ndamukong Suh. "For the most part, I havent seen too many (penalties) that were simply physical -- that they couldnt do anything about it," said Detroit coach Jim Caldwell, who took over in the off-season after Jim Schwartz was fired. "The ones we had were preventable, and thats what well work on." Detroit was stopped on fourth down inside the Jacksonville 5-yard line in the first half, and Mikel Leshoure lost a fumble deep in Jaguars territory in the fourth quarter. Ryan Broyles had a fumble at the Jacksonville 1 overturned on replay. George Winn scored from there to give Detroit a 13-12 lead with 7:12 remaining. Even when Detroits top players were in, the Lions struggled at times. Stafford nearly had two passes intercepted on the first drive, but Bush scored on his long run later in the quarter, showing he can still outrun defensive backs in the open field. Jacksonville started at its own 5 with 1:43 remaining in the first half, and Bortles was able to guide the Jaguars into position for Redferns kick as time expired. In the third quarter, Bortles took the Jaguars from their own 14 to the Detroit 27 before Redferns kick was blocked by Xavier Proctor. On its next drive, Jacksonville went 49 yards in four plays for its only touchdown. Coach Gus Bradley maintains that Henne is still the starter, and Bortles seems fine with that at this point. "This has been a perfect situation for me, because it has been a stress-free learning experience," Bortles said. "I knew on Day One that Chad was going to be the starter, and Ive been able to just focus on learning from him. When hes on the field, Im his biggest fan, because I want to see things going right and learn how it works in the NFL." Hurns had seven catches for 113 yards. Jacksonvilles Denard Robinson, a star quarterback when he was at Michigan in nearby Ann Arbor, got a nice cheer from the crowd in the first quarter when he made a tackle on special teams. NOTES: Detroit FB Montell Owens was evaluated for a possible first-quarter head injury, and Caldwell said he didnt have an update afterward. Lions LB Kyle Van Noy sat out with an abdominal injury. ... Bradley said Scobees injury wasnt too serious, but DT David Carter left in the fourth quarter with a sprained MCL, and DT SenDerrick Marks is expected to have an MRI on a shoulder injury.
