ROME， July 7 (Xinhua) -- World food prices shot up 4.2 percent in June， the sharpest monthly increase of the past four years， the Rome-based United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Thursday.
The overall index is 1 percent below the level reached a year earlier. The June rise， which affected all commodity categories except vegetable oils， was the fifth consecutive monthly increase.
A strengthening of maize prices contributed to the increase of cereal prices， up 2.9 percent from May， but still 3.9 percent below the June 2015 level.
Sugar prices rose 14.8 percent from May， as Brazil， the world's largest sugar producer and exporter， endured heavy rains that hindered harvesting and dented yields.
Demand for all categories of meat continued to rise， pushing prices for meat 2.4 percent higher than its revised May value.
Vegetable oil prices defied the trend， declining 0.8 percent from its May level.
The next installment of the FAO index， which is based on a basket of 55 goods and 73 price quotations in five major food commodity groups， will be released on August 4.
LUSAKA， Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- A senior Zambian government official said on Tuesday that the country is still food secure despite an invasion of army worms that have destroyed large swathes of maize fields.
Minister of Agriculture Dora Siliya said only 10 percent or 124，000 hectares of the planted maize fields have been attacked by army worms， a situation that does not pose any threat to the country's food security.
She told reporters during a weekly press briefing that the government will start distributing early maturing maize seeds to the affected farmers so that they could replant.
The Zambian minister however expressed happiness over the increase in awareness， a move that was making it easy to respond to the invasions as farmers were reporting outbreaks as soon as they occur.
Zambia last experienced an outbreak of army worms four years ago.
The government has so far spent 20 million Zambian Kwacha (about 2 million U.S. dollars) to purchase chemicals to fight army worms， she added.
Army worms have broken out in six of the country's 10 provinces， forcing the government to embark on a vigorous exercise of spraying affected fields with chemicals in order to contain the pests. Enditem

Rory McIlroy seized the most satisfying major victory of his career Sunday (US time) at the PGA Championship, battling from behind against top rivals to put himself on an unimagined golf level.
McIlroy, three strokes down at the turn after leading by one after 54 holes, eagled the par-five 10th and added two clutch birdies to overtake Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler at rain-drenched Valhalla in Louisville Under Armour Curry Shoes For Sale , Kentucky for his fourth major triumph.
